National Grateful Patient Day

“Always remember people who have helped you along the way, and don’t forget to lift someone up.” Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart

National Grateful Patient Day is a day to celebrate and appreciate medical professionals. The Registrar at National Calendar Day proclaimed Grateful Patient Day in 2017 to be observed each year on September 7.

This national holiday was established on behalf of Rolf Benirschke, an NFL player who fought a battle with Ulcerative Colitis, Hepatitis C, and Ostomy surgery. He sought treatment on September 7, 1980 and returned to the NFL after his illness. It nearly cost him his life.

From that moment on, he and patients from around the world rallied to say “Thank You” to those in the medical community.

A few Ways to Observe Grateful Patient Day

  1. Share your story of hope on social media

  2. Email or send a note of thanks to a medical professional

  3. Volunteer in a hospital or clinic

  4. Donate to a healthcare organization

  5. Send flowers to your Doctor’s Office

  6. Donate Blood

The root of joy is gratefulness…It is not joy that makes us grateful; it is gratitude that makes us joyful. Brother David Stendl-Rast
